How to Lift and Tighten Turkey Neck
/When it comes to aging, sagging skin, the neck is a common concern. A person’s neck is often one of the first areas of the skin to reveal signs of aging. This is because the skin in this area is thin and frequently exposed to the sun. As author Nora Ephron humorously states in her book, I Feel Bad About My Neck, “Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth. You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn’t have to if it had a neck.”
There is plentiful information out there that will tell you how to keep your face vibrant and youthful. However, society fails to mention that no matter how well you treat your face, the neck can impart your age. Fortunately, there are a growing number of non-invasive ways to improve the loose, wrinkled, sagging neck skin (aka “turkey neck”), without having to go under the knife. We figured, with Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s time we address the dreaded turkey neck!
What Causes Neck Sagging?
First off, let’s educate ourselves on the reasons why the neck skin tends to sag faster than other areas. “The layer of skin that makes collagen (called the dermis) is very thin on the neck, making it more prone to signs of aging” says board-certified dermatology nurse practitioner Shellie Norman from Island Dermatology LLC and Koru Medical Spa.
Years of stretching and twisting, the inevitable pull of gravity and pockets of subcutaneous fat have a cumulative, aging impact on neck skin. These changes generally begin to show around the age of 40. This is also the time when the underlying muscle fibers extending from the collarbone to the jaw start to detach and loosen, often resulting in turkey neck.
Turkey neck is completely normal and often hereditary, but can make you feel less radiant and confident about your skin. Here are some ways to lift and tighten turkey neck, so you can look and feel your best.
Kybella
Kybella is currently the only FDA-approved, nonsurgical, injectable technique that permanently dissolves unwanted fat underneath the chin. Kybella takes about 15-20 minutes to administer and has a very short downtime compared to surgical procedures such as liposuction. The process uses a series of deoxycholic acid injections to target fat cells under the chin.
The number of treatment sessions varies for each person’s specific needs, so it may take multiple treatments to reach optimal results. You can receive up to six Kybella treatments, with at least one month between each session.
The best candidate for this treatment is an adult 18 years or older with moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. You might not be a good candidate if you have had or are planning to have facial surgery, if you have trouble swallowing, are pregnant or nursing, or have an infection or medical condition in or near the planned injection site.
Get Rid of “Turkey Neck” With Laser Treatment
Laser Treatments do an incredible job tightening and rejuvenating the delicate neck skin. The best part of this non-invasive treatment is there is no down time and very minimal possible side-effects!
NeoSkin by Aerolase advances rejuvenation and tightening to new levels by enabling a comprehensive treatment to address tone and texture, lines, wrinkles and other unwanted skin structure. NeoSkin uses 650-microsecond laser energy, which safely and effectively renews the skin’s natural, youthful glow. NeoSkin accomplishes the results of what used to take numerous treatments and treatment methods in a single treatment.
This treatment typically takes 20-30 minutes depending on what conditions need to be addressed and how large the treatment area is. Treatment is highly safe and tolerable for all skin types and all skin tones, and may be performed without any skin cooling, anesthetic, and even without the need to touch the skin.
RF Microneedling
Before we get into Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling for the neck, let’s talk about what it is. RF Microneedling combines the power of traditional microneedling with the technology of radio frequency wavelengths to stimulate collagen and elastin fibers to repair and grow. As a result, the skin is tightened and lifted, wrinkles are softened, skin toned is evened out and elasticity is restored.
Koru Medical Spa uses the newest generation of RF Microneedling called the Virtue RF. Virtue RF boasts FDA-clearance for utmost safety and efficacy. Here at Koru, we are the first to offer this minimally-invasive treatment on Hawai’i Island.
