Celebrating Women's History Month with Dr. Shellie Norman
March is Women’s History month. This is one month to celebrate women’s contributions to history, culture, and society. So many amazing women have gone above and beyond to pave a path for others to thrive in their footsteps and make even bigger waves of change.
As a women-owned and operated business, what better way to honor the end of women’s history month than to celebrate one of the strongest women we know, Dr. Shellie Norman, founder and lead injector here at Koru Medical Spa. Shellie is one of the hardest working women, and has so much passion and love for others that truly shows through her work.
Years ago, Shellie dreamed of opening a space where women (and men) could visit and feel calm, loved, and comfortable in their own skin. We sat with Shellie and asked about her motivations behind opening Koru MedSpa and other fun questions like what advice she would give to her younger self…
Q: When did you start Koru Medical Spa?
A: July 2017
Q: What made you want to open a medical spa?
A: I have always found joy in improving the life of others. I wanted to make people feel better about themselves, to help others see the beautiful person they were created to be.
Q: What does beauty mean to you?
A: Beauty is so much more than skin deep. I know that is such a common overused statement, but it is so true. Beauty emanates from the soul. There is nothing more beautiful than the soul that expresses love and kindness to others. Beauty is found in nature, in watching a child play, in looking at an artist’s creation. If we look with love, beauty can be found all around us.
Q: How does your personal life journey tie into what you do as a career today?
A: I have been a nurse and healer for over 30 years. It is my life’s mission to bring healing to the lives of others. There is also a creative and artistic side to me. Koru Medical Spa allows me the opportunity to express both my gift of healing and to use my creativity to help others feel more confident.S
Q: Who is a woman that truly inspires you?
A: Mother Teresa. She was a woman that practiced unconditional love! She was able to see beyond the poverty, filth and sickness in the streets of Calcutta, India. She said “I see Jesus in every human being.” Mother Teresa knew what her mission was here on Earth and she was focused and steadfast on that mission. She demonstrated unconditional love by making a conscious decision to see past the obvious poverty and sickness, and instead focused on the soul- the person behind the eyes of each individual she cared for. She believed radical changes could be made by being kind and loving to one person at a time.
Q: What advice would you tell 16 year old Shellie if you could?
A: It’s okay to love yourself. You are a child of the Creator. You carry the DNA of the Creator. If the Creator is beautiful, perfect and Love in its purest form- how could you be anything but the same? Don’t speak or think negative, critical words about yourself, you are so valuable!
