Dermaplaning FAQ
If you haven’t heard the buzz about Dermaplaning, we’re here to answer all your questions about it!
What is Dermaplaning?
We like to think of Dermaplaning as starting fresh. Dermaplaning is a non-invasive treatment in which a trained skincare professional uses a scalpel blade to exfoliate the surface layers of the skin. Dermaplaning is an excellent option for those who are looking for a natural way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and acne scars, keep skin youthful and remove vellus hairs (peach fuzz) to create a smooth, more even complexion.
Who is it for?
Dermaplaning is for everyone! Especially for those who are looking for medical spa treatments or facials that are completely natural and non-toxic. Dermaplaning may also be an attractive option for those looking to minimize acne scars or improve skin tone without possibility of irritation from chemical peels and the expense of collagen induction therapy (microneedling) or laser skin resurfacing. Dermaplaning is not advised if skin has current inflamed acne lesions, skin cancer, open skin lesions, or active cold sores.
What happens during a Dermaplaning treatment?
During a Dermaplaning treatment, a trained and experienced medical aesthetician uses a special scalpel to safely and gently scrape away dead skin and vellus hair (peach fuzz). The Dermaplaning itself takes anywhere between 10-20 minutes depending on individual needs and at Koru Medical Spa, our stand alone Dermaplaning treatments take about 45min from start to finish. Dermaplaning should not hurt when done professionally and safely. One of the best things about this treatment is that results are immediate!
What happens after a dermaplaning treatment?
After a Dermaplaning treatment, skin will look brighter, smoother, and more even. Some light redness may occur, but should subside shortly after. There is no down time for Dermaplaning, making it an ideal treatment for those with a busy schedule. Try not to put makeup on right after or go in the sun, and remember to ALWAYS wear a non-comedogenic reef-safe sunscreen and proper sun protection.
Can I combine other treatments with Dermaplaning?
Yes! Not only can you combine Dermaplaning with other skincare treatments, but it is recommended. Because of the beautiful exfoliation your skin just received, it now makes a fantastically fresh canvas for other treatments to work their magic. We love combining Dermaplaning with rejuvenating spa facials and the DiamondGlow treatment for ultimate product absorption into the skin.
Can I wear makeup after Dermaplaning?
It is best to let the skin rest for a day after a Dermaplaning treatment as the skin barrier is more open from the exfoliation. Because all that peach fuzz and dead skin is now gone, putting on makeup should feel like a dream after a Dermaplaning treatment. Makeup should glide onto the skin more smoothly and evenly. We recommend getting a Dermaplaning treatment two or three day before a big event or photoshoot for the ultimate glowing complexion!
Does Dermaplaning make peach fuzz grow back thicker?
Contrary to popular belief, Dermaplaning does not cause vellus hairs (peach fuzz) to grow back thicker or darker. The only thing that changes the color and texture of hair is the changing of hormones during the natural aging process or with certain hormonal medical conditions. It may feel odd as it grows back, but it will grow at the same original rate, texture, and color.
How often should I get a Dermaplaning Treatment?
Like most facial treatments, we recommend getting a Dermaplaning treatment every 3-4 weeks, which coincides with the normal skin cycle of 30 days. To make the most of your treatment, it is extremely important to uphold a consistent medical grade at-home skincare routine suited to your unique skin type. And a bonus is that your Dermaplaning treatment will help the skin to absorb products better meaning a little will go a long way!
Why We Love It
Dermaplaning is an excellent natural treatment to properly exfoliate the skin and get rid of vellus hairs. Not only does skin look brighter, smoother, and more even, but it preps the skin for higher absorption of medical-grade products and other skin treatments like the DiamondGlow. With zero down-time, Dermaplaning is a great option for those with a busy schedule.
